Mount Tom's three directors have spent a combined 87 years at the camp! Doug Volan and Stan Friedmann grew up at Mount Tom, starting at ages 8 and 7 respectively. They have been campers, counselors, group leaders and assistant directors. Jill Newhouse has taught and directed at both the Mount Tom Day Camp and Day School for over a quarter of a century. Our directors have a great feel for what makes Mount Tom so successful and do everything they can to keep its standards high.
Doug Volan, Owner/Director, is approaching his 34th consecutive summer at Mount Tom. Since purchasing Mount Tom in 2001, his vision for the camp's future has been shaped by his deep and personal understanding of how a meaningful camp experience can influence a child's sense of well-being and self-esteem. Doug, an attorney at law, has served as president of both the New York State Camp Directors Association and the Rockland/Westchester Day Camp Association, is the organizational advancement oversight chair of the American Camp Association and a member of the Westchester County Camp Advisory Council.
Stan Friedmann has spent his entire career as an educator developing successful programs for children, adolescents and adults. He has also directed camp programs for families with special needs. At Mount Tom, he oversees staff recruitment, training and evaluation and serves as a mentor to group leaders, specialists and administrators. He is an award winning author of children's baseball books and is the father of three former Mount Tommers.
